human rights

Human rights are those basic standards without which people cannot live in dignity. To violate someone's human rights is to treat that person as though she or he were not a human being. To advocate human rights is to demand that the human dignity of all people be respected.

The most basic human rights are spelled out in the United States Bill of Rights. The U.S. Bill of Rights includes rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and freedom of assembly. It also mandates that the Bill of Rights and other rights enumerated in the Constitution must be interpreted not as a comprehensive list of all rights, but rather an incomplete list of rights.
